Ron Barceló Organic
The country-wide launch of Barceló Organic follows the initial test launch in New Jersey, where the organically produced rum performed exceptionally well, driven by strong consumer demand for organic foods and beverages.
It is a limited production rum made from fresh Dominican sugar cane juice; grown in a plot only 150 hectares in size the sugar cane thrives without the use of chemicals, fertilizers or pesticides. After distillation, the rum is aged in first-use American oak barrels.
Molasses distillation is the traditional way of making rum. It represents more than 90% of the world's production, but this rum is different and the aromas and taste differ markedly from the mass produced rums of other islands.
Barceló Organic has an intense amber color and aromas of caramelized cocoa and tobacco with hints of sour cherries and toffee. On the palate, notes of fresh tropical fruits stand out but, in the background, one tastes roasted dried nuts and pink pepper. Barceló Organic is clean with a long and smooth finish making it perfect for enjoying straight over ice.
This is another of those rums that should be treated with the same reverence as a single malt Scotch, though for the price, it can be used in a cocktail mix. Perhaps, a dark and stormy or a frozen daiquiri in a hot summer night would be of some interest.
Imported in the U.S. by Shaw-Ross International Importers, Barceló Organic is 80 Proof. It is available in a 750ml size with a suggested retail price of $24.99 but many retailers charge as little as $20.00.
